About us
The Waldviertler Roggenhof in Roggenreith was run as a farm by the Haider family for over 100 years and passed on from generation to generation. In 1990, Johann and Monika Haider took over and continued to work the farm by the same tradition. But in 1995, when Austria joined the EU, the economic situation changed and Johann and Monika Haider were faced with a big decision: continue or give up?
The idea was to build up a second mainstay with schnapps or grain distilling. A TV report about a family in South Tyrol who had grown grappa and made it a high-class product made Johann Haider ask himself the crucial question: How can grain schnapps be further refined? The result was showcased a good three years later – the finest form of grain schnapps: whisky.
Shaped in the grain distillery to create their own brand with an individual character. They specialised on rye and rye malt whiskies (which are worldwide very rare) together with barley malt whiskys. The media coverage and the increasing number of visitors confirmed the Haider family’s mission: You don’t have to come from Scotland to produce excellent whisky.
Since the Haider family began to tread their own path in the art of whisky production, the business has been gradually expanded from the former farm into today’s distillery and Whisky World of Experience. A number of clever company expansions characterised the second half of the 1990s and the 2000s. And they are constantly striving to improve the quality of their whisky too.
